BRACED Commission Strategy Retreat Begins at JOOPSA, Edo State with the Theme "Strengthening Institutions through Capacity Building"

The BRACED Commission Strategy Retreat began in the peaceful surroundings of JOOPSA, Edo State, under the theme "Strengthening Institutions through Capacity Building." This important event marks the start of a three-day summit, gathering a diverse group of leaders, policymakers, and experts focused on shaping a new direction for the BRACED states of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo, and Delta.

 

The three-day retreat is held at John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), Benin City.

 

The opening ceremony was a stunning display of grandeur and intellectual vivacity, honored by the presence of His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, and the elder state man Chief John Odigie-Oyegun (the first executive governor of Edo State. 

 

In his inspiring keynote address, Governor Obaseki emphasized the importance of resilient institutions as the foundation of sustainable development. “We cannot rebuild our country if we do not rebuild the institutions and structures that support our country. So, it is important that as we talk about fixing Nigeria, we must fix the bureaucracy that runs Nigeria at every level; federal, state, and local governments”.

 

The state governor added, that the need for the BRACED States to adopt a transparent, accountable, and merit-based system in selecting leaders within the civil and public service, which is a key ingredient in achieving effectiveness in the sector while highlighting the gains achieved so far by his administration in the state’s public service, remarked that Edo holds a top spot among sub-nationals in the area of quality infrastructures and manpower investment.

 

Dr. Steve Keshi, Chairperson of the BRACED Commission, captured the essence of the retreat. "Today, we have planted the seeds of transformation," he said. "Our journey towards institutional excellence has begun, and together, we will nurture these seeds into a thriving legacy for our states."

 

The opening day was highlighted by a compelling presentation from Prof. Olaopa Tunji, a renowned development strategist and the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission. He set the tone for the retreat with his incisive analysis of the continuous nature of capacity building. Prof. Olaopa asserted. "Institutions must adapt and evolve to meet the dynamic demands of governance and development."

 

The Director-General of JOOPSA, Imuwahen Ajoonu, stated "We are gathered here not merely to deliberate, but to ignite a movement towards excellence." She added, "The economy does not create itself; it is the people who make the economy through strengthening institutions to achieve enduring prosperity for the BRACED states. Our commitment to capacity building and service delivery is the cornerstone of our progress."

 

She further added that the retreat will offer a variety of panel discussions and interactive sessions aimed at addressing the complex challenges in the BRACED states. Esteemed stakeholders from different fields will share their insights on leadership development, policy innovation, resource management, and the use of technology in public administration.

 

The JOOPSA academy is a beacon of creativity and technological advancement, showcasing cutting-edge solutions aimed at enhancing public service delivery and accountability. Delegates were captivated by demonstrations of new tools and platforms designed to streamline governance processes and foster transparency.

 

 

The palpable energy in the room was evident as delegates from the six states engaged in spirited discussions, exchanging ideas and best practices. This collaborative spirit was further exemplified during the discussion, where participants tackled specific institutional challenges and proposed innovative solutions.
